Ottawa Police Aims for CALEA Accreditation
Ottawa Police Department pursues CALEA accreditation, a status reached by about 4 percent of U.S. non federal law enforcement agencies. The three year process includes self assessment, public feedback, and on site review. Ottawa Chief Dennis Butler notes CALEA standards cover all aspects from internal performance to how arrestees are treated. Sgt. Robbie Hawkins leads the accreditation effort as department self checks continue. If achieved, Ottawa would be the smallest Kansas agency accredited, joining six other Kansas agencies already certified.

Franklin County Fair targets FFA exhibitors double dipping
Franklin County Fair board moved to end out of county show entries by FFA and 4-H members. The rule bars livestock already shown at a county fair outside Franklin County from being exhibited again in Franklin. Board cites lack of participation by non 4 H members and communication gaps with parents as concerns. Angelle Higbie notes that details remain to be released as specifics are finalized.
