Mixed economic data shake markets in choppy NY trading
Markets drift with little change as Dow falls 0.2 percent to 8302.63 amid mixed signals from housing data and durable goods orders. Commerce reports show a 5.9 percent drop in factory durable goods orders, the largest in 10 months, fueling investor uncertainty and a sideways market mood. Local quotes include United Parcel and Walmart among others. Grain prices appear in regional postings with corn and soybeans listed.

Pheasant hunter shot when his dog steps on gun
Michael Murray, 42, was wounded in western South Dakota on the first day of pheasant season after his English setter Sonny trod on a loaded 12 gauge shotgun near his boot. Murray received 15 stitches and faced a night in hospital with a quick path to recovery. His brother-in-law applied a tourniquet and Murray's father watched nervously as they drove to a relative's house for aid.
