Franklin County Unit of the American Cancer Society sends volunteers to Ottawa to solicit pledges and donations, pass out pamphlets, and answer questions about services. Workers meet at Franklin Memorial Hospital at 5:30 p.m. and staff their block assignments for two hours, each wearing identification badges.

Shooting Suspect Earwood Faces Adult Certification
Earwood was named for adult certification on charges after a month of delay due to prior Shawnee County cases. He appeared in Shawnee County District Court Tuesday for parole violation and received an eight month sentence. Eight other teens, seven from Ottawa and one from Topeka, were charged in the shooting. Barwood faces murder. Perez, 14, was shot Sept. 24, bystander amid a feud between Ottawa teens linked to a group called the Mexican Mafia and a non affiliated faction.

Bus Train Collision Kills At Least Four Near Chicago
At least four people died when a bus collided with a Metra train near Chicago, with hospitals reporting 24 more victims. The bus lay mangled near the tracks as responders contained the scene with helicopters, ambulances, fire equipment, and police. The crossing had gates bells and signals but limited space near the stoplight, and the train was about 50 mph as brakes failed to stop the bus.
