Farmer Shot Near Scene Of Earlier Crime
An 80 year old Franklin County farmer J W Schoonover was found shot to death beside his tractor at his residence five miles southwest of Ottawa near US 50. Authorities say the death appears a homicide, with three bullet holes found in the tractor tires and in Schoonover's head and back. Mrs Schoonover reported the shooting after hearing a gun shot and finding her husband hanging from the tractor seat. The case joins three earlier unsolved county murders this year. An autopsy was performed and investigators searched for a weapon while interviews and a nitrate test were conducted on Mrs Schoonover who was the sole person at the scene. The Schoonovers faced lawsuits from their sons in Franklin County District Court over property and rental issues. Funeral arrangements were announced for 2 PM Monday at the Damron Towner Chapel with burial in Highland Cemetery. Surviving are six sons, five daughters, two sisters, and a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
