Merton’s Seven Storey Mountain Shapes Catholic Readers
In 1950s Paris editor Lee Edwards embraced Merton’s The Seven Storey Mountain and toured a Trappist retreat before choosing Catholicism. Since 1948 the book sold millions in 20 languages. HarperSanFrancisco released the last journal volume. Merton’s later works spurred debate over war, politics, and cloistered activism.
