Santa Clara AP Jerry Rice, out since tearing his left knee in the season opener at Tampa Bay, may return within two weeks. He hopes to play on December 15 against Denver when San Francisco retires Joe Montana's No 16 jersey.
NEW ORLEANS AP reports that one day after suggesting retirement from coaching Mike Ditka says he will remain with the New Orleans Saints until the team wants him gone after he had threatened to quit following the season.
Iowa State finishes 1-10, Kansas State goes 10-1 the first Wildcat team since 1910 to win 10 regular season games. Snyder notes top 10 status after conference wins and contemplates an alliance bowl invitation amid mixed winners and lopsided losses to Nebraska and Missouri.
St Louis AP reports Lawrence Phillips failed a drug test while with the St. Louis Rams and was fined about 20 times that season before his release. The Post Dispatch says the positive test involved a substance other than alcohol and NFL rules would suspend after two positives. NFL spokesman Aiello noted no known violations at league level.
Baker rolled to a 75-53 victory over Sterling, extending its win streak to three in the KCAC. Brent Dorsey led with 20 points and six rebounds, John Duncanson added 19 points and eight boards, and Scott Rhynerson scored 10 as Baker built a 36-22 halftime lead and later prepares for the Nebraska Wesleyan Classic.
Emporia State defeated Ottawa 94 to 54 after building a 46 to 25 halftime lead. Key players included McDonnell and McGuire for Ottawa and King and Forbes for Emporia State, with late-game minutes given to Hepner Foster Bolen and Bellinger on Ottawa’s side.
