Wage hikes tail off as 1976 shows slow gains
The Labor Department reports negotiated wage settlements for the first nine months of 1976 rose by 0.9 percent over the contract’s first year and 7 percent over its full life, slower than 1975. Third-quarter first-year increases reached 10.1 percent, the strongest since early 1975. Durable goods orders fell for the third straight month, down 9.1 percent to 48.5 billion, led by transportation equipment amid Ford strike effects, signaling softer consumer willingness for big purchases.
