Roberts warns Kansas on military readiness funding needs
U S Senator Pat Roberts told a Statehouse news conference that the nation’s military is overburdened with missions and underfunded. He urged $25 to $30 billion over five years to preserve readiness, predicting future surpluses must fund defense rather than Social Security or tax cuts. Roberts, a former Marine and member of Senate intelligence and armed forces panels, noted post Cold War manpower cuts.

Fire tears through Nigerian oil hub injuring many
The weekend blaze at an above ground pipeline near Warri in southeastern Nigeria left corpses found among victims sleeping in homes. Officials say over 120 firefighters labored to douse flames as fires spread to Jesse Mossogar and Oghara villages. Ethnic Ijaw youths have recently attacked oil sites over demands for services and representation. The cause of the weekend fire was not linked to those protests.
