Reservoirs Reduce Not Halt Flooding In Kansas Study
A corps of engineers study shows Melvern and Pomona reservoirs can lessen flooding on the Marais des Cygnes River but cannot end it. The Kansas Water Resources Board released the report and announced public meetings set for November 14 in Ottawa and November 15 in Quenemo to discuss findings. The board warns that flood reduction may be overestimated, noting the 1951 Ottawa flood peak would be halved, while the overall flood potential mirrors the 1944 event. The report covers from the reservoir to Ottawa. future volumes will address areas downstream.

Budget hearings for financing state agencies in fiscal 1975 will run from October 29 to November 21. State Budget Director James W. Bibb will hear requests, with Gov. Robert Docking usually attending the first hearing or sending a representative. The schedule, released by the governor’s office, aims to let agency heads justify budget increases before Bibb makes recommendations to Docking, who will then submit a proposed budget to the legislature in mid January.
