Tammy Ellis of Ottawa Real Estate has earned 1994 95 membership in the Kansas Association of Realtors Honor Society recognizing extensive community and professional activities beyond license requirements. The society includes 6800 members with about 2 percent honored.
Raymond and Dorothy Fitzgerald travel to Washington to testify for Speak Out USA on Medicare rules. They recount a 1994 staph infection treated in hospital despite home care options, noting high costs without Medicare and praising home health as a cost saver if allowed.
The Ottawa chamber hosted a ceremony at the new Wal-Mart distribution center with General Manager Malcolm Gillihan as guest speaker and recipient of a commemorative plaque. The center ships to 84 Wal-Mart stores within a 150 mile radius, covers 32 acres under roof, holds about 45 million in merchandise, has been open about four weeks and employs around 800 people. RMH Ansom Memorial Hospital reported its worst monthly finances of the year for September with expenses about 115000 above revenue. After tax adjustments the month still left the hospital about 36000 in the red, with wage costs over budget by 69000 and benefits and supplies over budget as well.
Increasing cloudiness with a low in the upper 50s and southwest wind of 10 to 15 mph. Extended outlook shows dry conditions Friday and Saturday with lows in the 30s and highs in the 60s. Sunday remains dry with lows from 35 to 45 and highs around 65.
The city approved boundary change actions and budgeted planning funds now spent. An audit of city and Firemen's Relief Association financial statements was approved with 1994 audit costs totaling 23649 and 1995 fees not to exceed 23649. Also approved 7500 for legal service by Ottawa lawyer Robert Bezek.
Ellis, mother of Stephanie Perez killed in a gang related shooting, testified on Montel that her children cannot return to Central Heights School. Officials say residency confusion and mutual attendance agreement created the dilemma as the family plans to move back toward Princeton.
The district reiterates that education is available to any resident living in the district while noting no board action to deny enrollment. Officials recount families relocating after the shooting and describe ongoing attempts to keep students working from home until they return.
