4 H Achievement Awards Presented at Franklin County Night
Franklin County 4 H Achievement Night honored many clubs and individuals with a wide set of awards. The new Good Neighbor Award went to the Don Schamle family for fire safety help at the Bean farm. Harold Wingert received the Glen Hayward Award, with many others earning Key Awards, I Dare You Awards, leadership, production credit, records, officer books, photography, and various pins for livestock, poultry, pigeons, and more.

Washington reports the Agriculture Department cautions that despite large federal aid, farmers' finances resemble the last three years. Drought, heat, and higher feed costs push up meat prices, raise loan delinquencies, and may extend hardship into 1984 and beyond with PIK aid only partly offsetting losses.

Helms Blockade Fails as King Holiday Bill Advances
In Washington the Senate rejected Sen. Jesse Helms bid to push the Martin Luther King Jr holiday bill to hearings by a 76 to 12 vote. Supporters led by Majority Leader Howard Baker push for a final vote at 4 p.m. EDT Wednesday with Coretta King to attend. The measure would create a third Monday in January holiday starting in 1986, with Reagan poised to sign after the House approved 338 to 90.
