James Michener dies at 90 famed storyteller of world fiction
James Michener, Pulitzer Prize winner and prolific author known for histories and travel narratives, died at age 90 from kidney failure. Born in 1907 in New York City, he rose from a Doylestown poorhouse upbringing to produce 40 best selling novels and a career spanning Japan, Hungary, Hawaii, Afghanistan, Poland, and the Caribbean. His works, including Tales of the South Pacific and The Bridge at Andau, emphasized religious and racial tolerance, hard work, and self reliance. He ordered dialysis stopped days before his death. Michener remained prolific, releasing A Century of Sonnets earlier this year and often noting the brain's continued function fueled his writing drive.
