Kansas GOP Proposes 73.5 Million Highway Plan

Republican members of Kansas interim Transportation Committee tentatively approve a 73.5 million plan to boost highway revenue by applying a 3 percent sales tax to motor fuels, trimming the gallonage tax by 1 cent, raising vehicle fees, and shifting Highway Patrol financing. The proposal would split gains 65 to state and 35 to local governments, with Gov. Carlin's plan favored by Democrats but opposed by Republicans. The measure awaits further review at the next meeting.
