Ottawa follows a hometown battle as Blaine Finch and Caleb Correll, both of Ottawa, vie to represent Kansas House District 59. The district covers western Franklin County and parts of northeastern Osage County, with Ottawa poised to gain a local representative in the state Legislature. The 11.1 mile U.S. 59 freeway from the Franklin Douglas line to south of Lawrence will open to unrestricted traffic Wednesday as crews remove barriers weather permitting. After opening, work will shift to rehabilitating the existing U.S. 59 to be Old U.S. 59 with structures and pavement upgrades through late summer 2013. The two county project cost about 145 million dollars, with Franklin County segment already open in 2010.
A 10 year old student discharged a fire extinguisher in the hallway at Appanoose Elementary School triggering an evacuation and a response from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. Superintendent Dotson Bradbury said the extinguisher caused a strong odor and space cleanup over 6000 square feet was required. The cause and details beyond the incident remain unclear.
