OPET to Host Phone-A-Thon in Ottawa
Ottawa Public Education Trust will sponsor a Phone-A-Thon from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday to raise funds for its projects. President Bill Allegre said 22 volunteers from the Ottawa District Office and Ottawa Family Physicians will call residents and accept pledges. Remaining donation options include Allegre Pharmacy and Peoples National Bank locations. OPET backs the Science Academy Language Academy and science kits from the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History for elementary students and grants for ten teachers.

Library fund-raiser continues for Ottawa board

They sell 500 numbered watercolor prints of the Franklin County Courthouse by Wilber Elsen for 50 each to benefit the library building fund. Fall colors brighten Baldwin County as the 35th Maple Leaf Festival fills streets with a parade at 14 a.m. Saturday, crafts booths, quilts, and performances at Baldwin Middle School and Rice Auditorium. Other events include Camelot at the Music Hall, I Hate Hamlet and Shear Madness at American Heartland Theatre, and concerts by Kansas City Symphony and Kansas City Chorale. The IRS reports that more than 700 Kansas taxpayers used a program to file delinquent state and federal returns. Bruce Thomas says help will run through October to assist voluntary filing, aiming to resolve tax matters without penalties.
