A Champion Spark Plug Company survey of 1,370 privately owned cars across nine U S cities finds 1970s models emit far less CO and HC than 1960s cars. Emission controls on most cars and regular engine maintenance drive declines, with Phoenix showing about 50 percent CO and 40 percent HC reductions at idle after tune ups.
