U S and French trio win physics Nobel prize
Two Americans and a French colleague win the Nobel in physics for cooling atoms with laser light. Steven Chu of Stanford William D Phillips of NIST Gaithersburg and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji of France cited for trapping and chilling atoms to near absolute zero. The work enables precise atomic clocks and quantum studies. The prize includes one million dollars and honors discoveries at near zero temperatures.

Escaped taxifolia seaweed threatens Mediterranean coast
The invasive Caulerpa taxifolia, escaped from Monaco in the 1980s, has spread across 7,600 acres of the French, Italian, Croatian coasts and Mallorca. It chokes fisheries and diving sites, prompting calls for a global strategy and debates over control methods including leaf-eating sea slugs. Authorities warn seafarers and have issued multilingual advisories.
