Kansas State University economist Mike Sands warns 1983 will bring high meat supplies and weak hog prices after 1982 gains. He notes large pig crops, costly feed, and ongoing liquidation of breeding stock, with 1984 projections only slightly better and prices unlikely to return to profit territory soon.
TOPEKA AP The Kansas Livestock Association executive vice president called a dairy amendment a ripoff of consumers taxpayers and producers. He criticized a 5 to 30 percent milk production cutback paid at $10 per hundredweight while USDA would keep support at $12.60. He warned the policy would worsen surpluses and may trigger 1 to 1.5 million extra cow slaughterings in early 1984.
