Unique Vantage Point From Her Desk

Helén Medaris has sat at the same desk for 28 years as legal secretary at Robert Green Chartered. She began on Oct 15 1951 in a historic three-room office once run by Basil Kelsey and later by Wint Winter. She recalls Second Street Ottawa 25 years ago with banks and Western Union nearby, a building collapse event, and her role evolving as shorthand and typing gave way to modern tools. Medaris plans retirement next year to join her husband, while continuing to serve the firm and its male principals.

Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe, a 63,469 acre Federal area, ranks as the third most heavily used U S wilderness site. Coffee prices climb as frost tightens world supply

The 1976-77 coffee crop is the smallest since 1970-71 due to a July 1976 frost in Brazil. Supplies will stay tight for about two more years as trees recover and new trees mature. Retail prices are expected to rise while per capita US consumption trends downward. Instant coffee prices lagged regular coffee.
