Kiehls Dairy Farm Proves DIY Viable Near Ottawa

Don and Mrs. Kiehl run a 41 milking cow dairy 10 miles northwest of Ottawa. They built the milk barn in 1975 and added free stalls and a trench silo the next year using no hired help. They own a quarter section and rent about 200 acres with 120 acres in row crops and 70 in hay. They cut hedge timber for fence posts and silo slabs, sealing slabs with plastic to prevent moisture, spending about 1500 dollars for the free stalls to prevent frozen udders in winter.

Gerald Anderson and Roy Moss expand in Wellsville with a herringbone milking barn and a computerized feeding system. They run 88 cows on 281 acres with corn silage and haylage, plus 30 acres of alfalfa planted to replace losses. A lagoon handles wastewater near a flood prone creek, while a metal tag and lights system automate rations, pause changes, and monitor intake to stabilize milk flow and herd health. Old magnetic feeders caused fattening and higher costs, but the new system reduces these issues and improves milk fat content.
