Catholics And Protestants Clash In Belfast Ireland

In Belfast police moved to cool tensions after demonstrations by Roman Catholics and Protestants. About 1,500 Queen's University students marched to protest last weekend's civil rights clashes in Londonderry, while a planned Protestant counterdemonstration led by Rev Ian Paisley was banned. A gasoline bomb hit a church, sparking police dispersal of youths. Londonderry remained quiet after authorities banned another march.

Disorder Hits Same Spot in Washington Riot After Jay Walking Shooting

A neighborhood scarred by April riots faced a brief racial clash after a white patrolman shot Elijah Bennett during a jaywalking stop. Police fired tear gas to disperse about 260 protesters on 14th Street near U Street, with one arrest reported. Eyewitness accounts varied on whether the man struck the officer. The trouble began with a protest meeting near the New School for Afro-American Thought and escalated as store windows were smashed and bricks and bottles flew from the crowd.
