Cindy Blakely, senior, trains ten miles daily during season and sixty to eighty weekly in off season, earning top scores and three straight meet wins. Her career spans seventh grade to AAU and Junior Olympics, with national meets and an eye toward college scholarship and possibly the Olympics.
Four OHS teams show mixed records as volleyball season begins. Varsity 4-9 after a Highland Park win, with coach Swartz noting state progress depends on sub state. Key league foes include Bishop Miege Blue Valley and Topeka Hayden. JV, 15-14 in matches, 4-6-2 in games, recent Louisburg stretch dampened. freshman 1-5 in matches, 4-13 in games, but Bonner Springs win offers slim hope.
Ottawa High School girls cross country dominated the state’s hardest two mile layout as Cindy Blakely led with 12 24. Connie Frank followed at 12 48 and Jeri Cole ran 13 10 to take third. Krista Crenshaw and Sandra Ansley added top finishes, with Cody Blakely, Hope Moeller, Shelly Ward among new runners as state meet looms November 6 at Manhattan. The team eyes EKL meet on October 21 at Miege against Ottawa with Salina South and Miege looming as state contenders.
