Odor sensing tech aims to curb contraband foods at U.S. ports
USDA researchers, led by Dr. James Cavanaugh, study odor based instruments to distinguish scents of lemon, lime, cosmetics, and food to detect illegal entry of diseased produce. They build odor data banks for electronic sensing while avoiding false alarms amid drug and contraband flows. In 1978, over 7,000 pests and diseases were destroyed at airports.

Costa Rica Pre Columbian Art Exhibit Opens at KU Gallery
A Costa Rican pre-Columbian art show, drawn from four collections, is on display through Oct 23 in the Kansas Union Gallery at the University of Kansas. The exhibit, titled Costa Rica: Prehistoric Crossroads of America, features 600 jade, ceramic and stone objects from KU MISCO and contributors, with artifacts dated mainly 100 to 1500 A D and some to 500 B C.
