In Sultan Washington an animal rights effort to free 10 000 minks ended in tragedy as liberated animals cannibalized others and preyed on birds livestock and a dog. About 9 000 minks have been recaptured with 1 000 still missing and the incident under investigation by the FSI.

Burns Jr 84 of Osawatomie died Oct 1 at Olathe Medical Center Funeral services set for Oct 5 at Eddy Birchard Funeral Home He was born June 3 1919 in Missouri and grew up in Poplar Bluff He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and US Army in World War II He owned a Beagle grocery store and worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad and US Postal Service He married Esther Thies in 1942 He is survived by his wife a daughter three sons ten grandchildren and other relatives Burial will be Beagle Cemetery Memorials to Beagle United Methodist Church.
Eula Aleen Beckwith 83 died Oct 1 2003 at Richmond Care Center. Graveside service 11 a.m. Monday at Garnett Cemetery with Rev Gary Benjamin. Born June 25 1920 in El Dorado Springs Missouri she worked 12 years as a sewing machine operator for Warner Manufacturing. Survivors include son Roger Beckwith four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Memorials to Eula Beckwith Memorial Fund.
