Graduation rates rise to 86.5 percent nationwide
The Education Department reports the US high school graduation rate increased to a record 86.5 percent in 2000, up from 85.9 percent in 1999 and 84.8 percent in 1998. Despite gains, Hispanic, black and low income students trail whites and wealthier students, with Secretary Rod Paige noting insufficient progress given school funding since the 1970s. The rate since 1972 has fluctuated, earlier peaking at 86.4 percent in 1992.

Science test results show waning high school grasp
Washington AP reports only one in five high school seniors fully understand science and half know the basics. NAEP 2000 scores fell three points from 1996, with just 18 percent answering challenging questions correctly, 53 percent basic knowledge. Education Secretary Paige calls the decline morally significant. Gerry Wheeler attributes it to emphasis on reading and math and lack of training funds.
