KF&G Proposes Shifting Kansas Reservoir Use to Recreation
The Kansas Fish and Game Commission seeks to change four western Kansas reservoirs from irrigation to fish and wildlife recreation and flood control. A study with the Bureau of Reclamation notes declining inflows and groundwater use have dropped levels, with Kirwin and Cedar Bluff near dry by 2000. Commission members urge public input and action by Rep. Pat Roberts.

Kansans Discover First New Duck Since 1917
Lawrence researchers Philip Humphrey and Max Thompson report a new duck species found along Argentina’s Chubut coast during a 1979 expedition. Tachyeres leucocephalus, a whiteheaded flightless steamer, weighs about eight pounds in males, with a yellowish bill and gray body. This discovery marks the 146th duck species and echoes the Magellanic steamer in form.
