One-shot radiation may replace six weeks for breast cancer
Preliminary study from Universiy College London suggests a single concentrated intra operative radiation dose could match six weeks of post operative therapy for early breast cancer. In 29 women with lumpectomies, about half received the radiation probe immediately after surgery and half followed standard six week treatment. All remained cancer free for 18 months, indicating potential for broader lumpectomy use, especially for patients far from treatment centers.
