Farming not getting any safer as job hazards persist

On a cold late November day in 1990 Jeff Malm of Kulm North Dakota was injured when his coat sleeve caught in farm machinery. He lost tendons and bruised his spinal cord, now uses a wheelchair and is a quadriplegic. Officials say farming remains among the most dangerous occupations with frequent auger, rollover, and grain-bin accidents. Despite safety campaigns, most farms still struggle with older equipment and cost pressures. Insurance and safety programs target older workers and youth, while a shifting farm population and lean times hinder adopting new safety measures.
