Kansas bison nearly wiped out long before settlers
Lawrence AP reports KU paleontologists with Oxford colleagues analyzed 442 ancient bison DNA samples, focusing on Wyoming Natural Trap Cave. They conclude a 20,000 year genetic bottleneck reduced variation, with populations previously 30 to 70 million before European settlement, shaping a Plains where buffalo roamed.
