City paints trees to deter Christmas tree thefts in Olathe
City arborist Rick Spurgeon explains red painted trees on medians and in parks deter thefts by making trees unattractive and easier to spot. Two sides are painted to prevent removal and some trees receive a bad smelling chemical to deter would be thieves. Since 1985 the practice began after 25 trees were chopped, and only one tree has been stolen in each of the last three years.

Fire damages Ottawa plant. sprinkler containment aids recovery
The Ottawa plant suffered damage mainly to finished products and packaging with no reported equipment losses. About 62 workers were employed at the time, 60 remained at work after the fire, and officials estimated the loss at several hundred thousand dollars. The sprinkler system limited the spread, and no injuries were reported. The fire is believed caused by an inappropriate light bulb in an enclosed fixture.
