Social Security Bypasses Many Working Women
New York AP reports married working women often receive no benefits from Social Security taxes they pay. Phyllis Harrison of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs says many women gain greater retirement benefits by being considered dependents of their husbands. The study notes only 21 percent of working women are covered by any pension plans and highlights low paying jobs and wage gaps between women and men. The greatest rise in the labor force is among women ages 20 to 30, with 44 percent of today’s workers single or divorced and over 70 percent of mothers returning to work after birth.
