Kansas small business health plan caps expenses at 5k to 10k
State officials and a nonprofit formed under a 2000 law promote a new small business health plan. Offered by Allied National Companies for firms with two to 50 workers, it provides coverage similar to full plans but caps annual expenses at 5 000 7 500 or 10 000 dollars. The effort aims to extend coverage to workers without employer plans and may seek subsidies for low wage workers in the future. The nonprofit Health Partners Benefit Association backs the plan and has attracted private grants to market it through Benefit Management Inc. in Great Bend.

Pension shortfalls may mean drop in profits for many firms
AP reports that persistent pension underfunding will crimp profits across many S&P 500 firms mainly those with defined benefit plans. Falling stock markets and lower discount rates reduce pension assets and raise current contributions, risking earnings in 2003 and beyond. Ford estimates a 3.2 billion underfunded plan with a 125 million higher pension expense if trends continue.
