Chemical fire at railyard forces evacuations in Kansas City
A boxcar carrying about 115000 pounds of potassium nitrate exploded into flames at the Union Pacific railyard in Kansas City triggering evacuations of four schools and railroad workers. Three injured were taken to a hospital for observation as a toxic smoke cloud dissipated. The chemical used as fertilizer does not burn but releases toxic fumes under high heat.

Carmen McRae Dies at 74 in Beverly Hills
Carmen McRae, famed scat singer and jazz stylist, died at home in Beverly Hills at age 74 after a stroke and a brief semicoma. Secretaries say she had been hospitalized a month earlier and slipped into semicoma four days before death.
