A vehicle on U S Highway 169 near Garnett swerved to miss another car, left the roadway, struck a guardrail, and caused damage estimated over 3000. The incident occurred on a day with reports from Vir faters.
Responders were dispatched Tuesday to the 300 block of North Elm Street for an animal complaint. A non injury accident occurred on private property in the 900 block of Ninth Terrace, with responders dispatched the same day.
At 8:58 a.m. Tuesday, Ottawa Fire Department responded to a passenger vehicle fire at 1001 S Cedar St. Firefighters arrived to extinguish the blaze and prevent spread. No injuries reported and cause under investigation.
A special Ottawa city council meeting is set for tonight to decide a proposed 30 cent gas price increase. Officials demand $13 000 be remitted from a $25 000 offered by the Gas Company for Ottawa's franchise as pressure mounts over the rate change. A Missouri Pacific passenger train struck David A Barber 85, on Maple Street, narrowly missing him as his cow crossed First and Maple. He suffered an arm injury. The Herald hosts a pumpkin pie contest, drawing 46 pies to its office, filling the air with the scent of baking.
Mae Welton born 1927 to Mae Gladding and Willis Welton died. She married Elston Bishop in 1947 and later died leaving son Mark Bishop and wife Lou Don of Radford with five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Survived by twin sister Vadamill Max and sister Orpha Dell Haney, brother Dwight Welton with Delores, and sister-in-law Carol Welton. Ottawa Co op posted Wednesday afternoon prices for hard wheat 6.63 soybeans 11.56 corn 6.58 milo 6.18. Franklin County USDA Farm Service Agency listed corn 6.35 milo 10.97 oats 2.57 soybeans 11.56 wheat 6.86.
The Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service projects 430 million bushels of corn this year, down 5 percent from October and 26 percent from last year, with 4.3 million acres and 100 bushels per acre. Nationally, corn output falls 1 percent from October and last year. Wheat supplies also reduced by 9 million bushels per USDA estimates.
