DNA tests aim to verify extinct Cape Lion lineage from cubs

Two lion cubs from Novosibirsk Zoo were sent to Cape Town, South Africa, for DNA testing to confirm if they belong to the Cape Lion breed long thought extinct. Curator Rostislav Shilo said the cubs originated from parents Rita and Simon and were born in 1961, with museum comparisons planned to preserve the lineage. Cape Lions, noted for larger bodies and black manes, were once believed killed in the 19th century though some captive individuals persisted. Specialist Helmut Pech of Vienna’s Schoenbrunner Zoo commented on their distinctive traits and historical status.
