Kerry spoke by phone to Bush in a brief conversation described by sources as cordial and pointed. Democratic officials say Kerry urged unity and warned the country is divided while Bush acknowledged the need to act, as uncounted ballots and provisional votes fed the race in Ohio and beyond.

Kansas' Brownback among Senate Republican majority

Republicans expanded their Senate edge by winning in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Louisiana, with undecided races in Florida and Alaska. The GOP secured 53 seats, ousting Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, while Barack Obama won in Illinois and urged loyal opposition. Martinez, Burr, DeMint, and others also claimed victories as the party shifts to confirm nominees in a strengthened majority.
