Day Camp for Franklin County youths set for June 14 15 at the Franklin County Fairgrounds sponsored by the Junior Leaders in the 4 H program. Open to all second and third graders with June 14 for second graders and June 15 for third graders.
Grain sorghum farmers brace for chinch bugs after three years of rising overwinter populations. Entomologists at K State warn the threat is greater, with bugs moving from wheat into sorghum and corn. CCC loan rates rise to nine percent for 1979, seven percent for 1978 loans. Thimet granules and furadan offer partial earlier season control, with foliar sprays needing high spray volume and repeated applications due to short duration. Barrier sprays with Endrin face EPA concerns, while natural enemies like white fungus could suppress populations in warm, moist conditions. Thirteen Franklin County youths attend Kansas State University Youth Conference June 5-8, open to all youth.
Franklin Countians plan to raise fryers and layers as chick sales rise. George's Feed Store reports selling 9,000 chicks this year, with buyers purchasing as few as 25 and as many as 400. Fryers dominate but some straight runs will become layers.
County Camp hosts 40 boys and 20 girls this weekend at Rock Springs 4-H Center with counselors Sharon Seitz Donna Davis Nancy Ferguson Joe Blake Jr. and Alan Maxwell. Chick sales rise at Farmers Co-Op Ottawa Co-Op and Ottawa Grain and Seed as egg and meat costs push residents to raise their own poultry.
