Major league and division standings alongside Wednesday game results. Minnesota topped Milwaukee 8 to 7 while Texas Seattle California Toronto beat Chicago 6 to 5. Various games listed with starting times and pitchers, including Colorado at Pittsburgh and Atlanta at Cincinnati.
The Milwaukee Brewers placed outfielder Turner Ward on the 15 day disabled list retroactive to May 26. They recalled right handed pitcher Terry Burrows from New Orleans of the American Association.
Ottawa split a Wednesday doubleheader at Harvey Drake Field after a 6-5 loss to Osawatomie. Josh Turner pitched a one hit shutout in the nightcap for a 6-0 win, walking two and fanning six. Gary Erisman drove in three in the sixth with a bases loaded double to spark the effort. Erisman later went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the second game as Ottawa built a 2-0 lead with Snethen and Fuller contributing. Mental errors hampered Ottawa in the first game, as Osawatomie used a four-run sixth to seize control.
Ottawa American Legion AA eyes a rematch with Garnett Muddogs at 8:30 p.m. Friday opening the Ottawa Invitational. McDonnell, who pitched for Ottawa University, struck out 14 in an 8-3 Maddogs win over Ottawa last week. Ottawa coach Barnhart says they will be ready and value pitching depth as they chase a tournament title.
Detroit tops Kansas City 5-4 to snap a 12-game losing streak behind four solo homers from Cecil Fielder Melvin Nieves Curtis Pride and Raul Casanova and a seven-inning start by Greg Gohr Pride scored the go ahead run in the eighth after a triple off Kevin Appier. Reliever Mike Walker earned the save by recording the last four outs.
Cleveland slugger Albert Belle cursed a fan who refused to give up a home run ball during the Rangers 11 Indians 3 game in Arlington. Bell had already been ordered to counseling over temper issues and was taken out in the sixth after the incident. The fan, Ken Logan of Benbrook, received the ball via club officials and planned to trade it for an autographed one. Continued on page 6.
The Star reports Scott Appier wants to remain with the Kansas City Royals, saying the offered salary is far below what he could earn as a free agent. Negotiations opened at 16.5 million for three years as the team explored keeping him in Kansas City.
