Oilmen protest Franklin County oil lease valuations
Four oilmen from Franklin County paid a courtesy call on county commissioners as they plan appeals to the State Board of Tax Appeals over increased oil well valuations. County officials said state guidelines determine lease values, limiting local powers to alter assessments. The protesters cited potential 300 to 500 percent tax increases, noting the protest deadline passed and that only those who filed appeals may receive relief if the state chart is adjusted.

Carlin Calls Utility Rate Increases A Fact Of Life
Governor John Carlin said energy costs rising are inevitable and cannot be rolled back. The Kansas Corporation Commission approved 85.3 million dollars in rate hikes for five electric utilities, with Carlin defending national energy trends and confirming plans to support broad public works and mass transit initiatives through a constitutional amendment. He also said Sunflower Electric expansion will be decided by the Kansas Corporation Commission and voiced interest in leading the state Democratic delegation to the national convention. Conferenced remarks noted no replacement for Junction City publisher John Montgomery as Democratic national committeeman.

Family Feud Leads to Stabbing in Ottawa Rural Home
A 16 year old Ottawa RFD 3 boy was listed in good condition at Ransom Memorial Hospital after a Thursday afternoon stabbing at a rural Ottawa home. His 15 year old brother was arrested for aggravated battery and released to his mother. Sheriff Rex Bowling noted the attack followed a dispute over their 3 year old sister and an apple. The elder victim was treated in ICU then moved to a private room with no apparent vital damage. County Attorney Jim Clark planned juvenile actions for next week. The incident occurred in a hallway between the kitchen and living room as the elder attempted to strike the younger, who held a paring knife. The mother was away, summoned by the younger brother.
