FBI destroys e mail evidence on bin Laden network
The FBI erased all e mail data captured during a Denver based wiretap using Carnivore after the system inadvertently intercepted non target messages. The memo notes the technician destroyed the e mail take including material on the suspect under a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant. The matter arose amid wider scrutiny of pre 9 11 terrorism investigations and the bin Laden unit’s scope at FBI headquarters.
