Kansas In 1966 May Be Driest In Long Time
The first five months of 1966 may be the driest ever in Kansas. Nine station readings show 24 to 52 percent of normal precipitation with Topeka at 3.17 inches for Jan 1 to May 26, 29 percent of normal. May brought near zero moisture in places like Johnson and Ellsworth, while Horton and Independence fared better. Moisture deficits echo historic droughts of 1936 and 1956, but irrigation and water conservation efforts are easing impacts this year.
