Strong Field In California Relays This Saturday
MODESTO Calif AP Headed by the heralded mile duel between Australia's champion Herb Elliott and Oregon collegian Cyrol Burleson the 19th California Relays Saturday night boasts its strongest field. Included are sprinter Norton current world's fastest human 400 meter hurdles record holder Glenn Davis shot putters Parry O'Brien and Bill Nieder and Abilene Christian sprint relay team. The 10 yard dash matches Norton ex San Jose star and co holder of the world record at 9.3 second and Doug Smith the big surprise from Occidental who beat Ray two weeks ago in the West Coast Relays at 9.4. O'Brien filed a late entry Thursday to compete against Nieder. O'Brien the Olympic champion notes the official world record at 63 feet 4 inches but Nieder smashed the mark with a throw of 65 7 that awaits official recognition. With Norton and Smith in the 100 yard field is Oregon s Roscoe Cook who won the event in a surprise here last year equalling the world record. The top interest centers on the mile run matching Elliott then Assie with the world record at 3 54 5 and Burleson the 20 year old sophomore who last April 23 ran a 3 58 6 breaking the American citizen s record in becoming the second US runner to go under four minutes. Elliott despite a sore knee predicts he ll run under four minutes here but the collegian has plenty of support among track experts.

Rathmann Poised To Win Memorial Day 500
INDIANAPOLIS AP Jim Rathmann, a 1-year veteran from Miami, is overdue to win the Memorial Day 500 mile race. He has finished second three times, most recently by 23 seconds to Rodger Ward last year, driving a Watson car owned by Ken Rich and Paul Lacy with Chick Hirashima as chief mechanic and Smokey Yunich as pit crew chief. Rathmann began in roadster racing at Carrell Speedway, rose through Chicago Horrods and big-league racing with Pat Flaherty and Bob Schweikert, and is seen by experts like Bill France as a strong contender after setting a world closed course record at Daytona last year.

Change Rules For All-Star Contest
NEW YORK AP American and National League baseball all stars will not face the best pitcher in the opposing league in both games this year. The games are set for July 41 at Kansas City and July 13 in Yankee Stadium New York. A new rule bars any pitcher from taking part in both games. Last year Don Drysdale started both games for the National League. The rule and a roster expansion to 30 per side are the innovations this year. The first game was at Pittsburg July 7 and the second at Los Angeles Aug 3 after players voted for a repeat. The Nationals won game one 5-4 and the Americans game two 5-3. For the third straight year the eight starting men are chosen by players. managers pick the remaining 22 plus coaches.
