Former Ottawa firefighter reveals cistern locations and counts
Harry Thomas, Ottawa fire department veteran of 1909 to 1927, claims three underground cisterns supplied early pumper equipment. He cites a large one at 3rd and Main used for a banquet, two others at 5th and Main by Ottawa High School and at North Main near City Service, with public horse hitching used to power the pumper. He recalls one major fire at Hamlin House Hotel area and notes the city relied on citizens’ horses rather than stored ponies.
