Alaskas air pollution worsens beyond California's
Anchorage and Fairbanks lead Alaska in carbon monoxide pollution, surpassing EPA standards 72 times in 1983 and prompting new vehicle emission inspections. With federal highway funds at risk, the programs will compel annual checks, costing up to 50 dollars in Anchorage and 35 in Fairbanks, and repair costs up to 150 dollars.
