Geologists estimate about 120 U S volcanoes may erupt someday with five in Hawaii and 91 in Alaska. The rest are in other states. Alaska averages four eruptions per year, most near sparsely populated areas. A volcano forms from magma chamber beneath the vent, erupting as lava and gases.
