Small Trees Should Be Staked for Stronger Planting
Kansas wind highlights need to stake newly planted trees to prevent uprooting.Gary L. McDaniel of K State advises two by two inch wooden stakes reaching to the first strong branch, nylon ties, and one to two years of bracing. For trees over four inches diameter add three guy wires with hose sleeves. Use trunk wraps for first years, maintain a clear three foot mulch circle, and mulch with cedar bark or peat to conserve moisture. Exposed sites require extra water protection and an L shaped cloth barrier for south and west sides. Efforts to protect nursery stock are worthwhile.
