County Plans for Bridge Upgrades With State Aid

Franklin County commissioners pursue off system bridge replacements using state loaned funds and federal matching money. They anticipate about 106000 dollars in federal aid to replace a bridge between Ottawa and Centropolis and may set aside up to 45000 dollars in federal revenue sharing to pair with anticipated KDOT funds for a November bid. The No. 3 bridge near Coal Creek is a potential second project, estimated at 100000 dollars for a 20 ton span, with design complete and rights of way partially obtained.

Parole Date for Sirhan Sirhan Is Canceled

California parole board canceled the September 1, 1984 parole date for Sirhan Sirhan citing continued threats of violence and murder. A new hearing will be held in six months. The decision, though urged by Los Angeles County DA Van de Kamp, rests on evidence of dangerous conduct in prison and was not driven by public outcry.

Senate approves White House budget with tax increases

The Republican Senate passed a White House backed budget calling for sharp social program cuts and 107 billion dollars in tax increases over three years, yielding a 116 billion dollar 1983 deficit. The 49 to 43 vote drew criticism from Democrats while some conservatives sought a balanced budget plan for 1985. The session included a 70 to 21 vote to kill that alternative and a 57 to 40 overturning a one year rail retiree benefits freeze. The result delayed the final passage and postponed a weekend retreat.
