Stocking Costs Downsize Quail Release Program
The Forestry Fish and Game Commission reports the first year of a quail banding program as costly and inefficient. Only about 2 birds per 100 released were recovered from fall stockings and roughly 1 to 7 birds per 100 released from spring stockings. About 5,000 banded birds were released in spring and 5,600 in fall on one fifth of the total releases, with different colored bands to distinguish groups.
