Comprehensive plan update details Franklin County trends and zoning decisions
Consultant Gary Griffith presented county wide trends to the Franklin County Planning Commission noting non residential growth around Ottawa near I-35 and US-59 and residential growth in large single family parcels along paved roads. Utility needs are modest with water as key for homes and on site propane and septic systems. The report maps the 100 year flood plain along the Marais des Cygnes and documents prime farmland covering about 72 percent of Franklin County. The commission voted to deny Arnold and Michael Topp’s zoning change for a 3.4 acre site off Highway 50 near Village Inn Motel for a truck storage and towing complex. They also accepted a preliminary plat for Walnut Creek Acres adding 11 home sites on five acre parcels with 50 foot setbacks and Rural Water District 1 services.

Violin Recital at Ottawa University by Osage City Student
Osage City 18 year old Chris Seeman will perform a senior violin recital at 3 p.m. today in the Administration Building auditorium at Ottawa University 1001 S Cedar. Seeman has studied under Alice Joy Lewis for about 15 years and begins with the Suzuki program. He graduates from Osage City High School this spring and is the son of Sue Seeman of Emporia and Jim and Dayla Seeman of Osage City.

Four Baker University students from the area receive scholarships based on academics, activities, leadership, and campus interview results. Among the awardees are Stephanie Chandler and Julie Sutton each earning 3700 dollar music department scholarships, Veronica Highley a psychology scholarship, and Kimberly Pottorff receiving an Academic Leadership Award of 3000 dollars for incoming freshmen. Chandler is active in 4-H and holds multiple honors, Sutton graduates Ottawa High School and is active in NHS and many clubs, Highley hails from Pomona with FHA and student council, and Pottorff from Wellsville with NHS and FBLA involvement.

Clergyman to Celebrate 50th Ordination Anniversary
Reverend Ronald K. Sinclair of Hickory will mark the 50th anniversary of his ordination with a 10 a.m. service at Plymouth Congregational Church UCC in Lawrence. A coffee hour and luncheon follow. He was ordained May 21, 1944 by Berkshire South Association and served in navy duty during World War II and the Korean War before ministering in five congregations and retiring in 1981 to Ottawa. Friends from Spirit Lake and Sioux City will attend.

The Ottawa library announces two summer reading programs starting June 1. The kids program A Whale of a Tale runs through August 5 with prizes donated by Wendy's, Pizza Time, Taco Tico, Sirloin Stockade, and city pool passes. The Summer Mystery for grades six to eight mirrors Clue with 1,200 pages to earn clues, a Little Caesars pizza, and a library poster. Trustees also reinvest about $40,000 of library funds in a two-year treasury note at roughly 5.7 percent.

Premiums Reduced for Kansas Workmen Compensation Insurance
