Urban decay over school closures in Kansas City
In Kansas City the school board voted to close six elementary schools and two junior high schools citing tight finances and declining enrollment. The move sparks parental and student anger, but is expected to stand. The closures, centered in the central Heart of America, are linked to busing for integration and ensuing white flight, with abandoned homes and vandalism fueling blight. Federal housing efforts have faltered, and new decay risks continue if busing and suburban flight persist.

Windfall tax on oil profits yields bureaucrats’ windfall
First quarter results show oil company profits down while federal tax receipts rise by 5 billion dollars. About half the excess profits tax is paid by consumers at gas stations, the rest by companies and stockholders. Retained earnings fall, hindering modernization and new oil production as energy alternatives progress slowly. The piece argues the tax mainly benefits the bloated federal bureaucracy.

The essay references Lebanon, Ireland, Argentina, Guatemala, and U.S. politics, noting religious strife, disappearances, and U.S. foreign policy with sharp, satirical observations.
